Ball-bearing or undermount: how to choose a drawer slide.
Every drawer slide answers four questions: where it mounts, how far it opens, how much it carries and how it closes. WEITE makes two families that answer them differently, and this guide walks through the choice the way a cabinet maker specifies a kitchen.
1. Side-mount ball-bearing slides
The 7000-series ball-bearing slide screws to the side of the drawer box and the cabinet wall. It is 45 mm tall, opens to full extension in three sections and is visible when the drawer is open. Steel thickness sets the class: the 7007 uses 0.8 / 1.0 / 1.0 mm steel and carries 25 kg per pair; the 7008 and 7001 use 1.0 / 1.0 / 1.2 mm for 30 to 35 kg; the 7015 uses 1.2 / 1.2 / 1.5 mm for 40 kg. Choose the thickness by what the drawer will hold: cutlery and linen on 1.0 mm, pots and plates on 1.2 mm, tools and bottles on 1.5 mm. All lengths run 200 to 500 mm in 50 mm steps, so pick the longest that fits the cabinet depth minus about 10 mm.
2. Undermount concealed slides
The undermount runner sits under the drawer bottom and hooks onto the drawer sides, so nothing shows when the drawer is open. WEITE's 7002, 7003 and 7010 are synchronised, which means a bar links both sides so the drawer runs straight even when pushed from one corner. They fit 16 and 18 mm drawer sides, release without tools for cleaning and carry 35 to 40 kg. The 7016 is a lighter two-section version for shallow drawers.
3. Closing action
Plain slides (7007, 7008) close by hand. Soft-close slides (7001, 7001K, 7015, 7002, 7016) have a damper that catches the drawer over the last few centimetres and pulls it shut silently; the twin-spring versions pull harder for heavier drawers. Push-open slides (7009, 7003, 7010) spring the drawer open when the front is pressed, for handle-less fronts. Combine push-open slides with push-open hinges from the cabinet hinges family and the whole kitchen works without handles.
4. Special cases
Stair cabinets, tall larder pull-outs and any drawer over 500 mm deep need the 7451: 2 mm steel throughout, 120 kg per pair, extension up to 1250 mm, for cabinets up to 2 m high and 400 to 600 mm wide.
Finish and testing
Ball-bearing slides are Q235 or cold-rolled steel with an electrophoretic black finish; undermount slides are zinc-plated. Slides are tested to 50,000 open-close cycles in WEITE's testing centre. Slides pack 10 or 15 pairs per carton; the minimum order is one carton per length.
Questions distributors ask.
What is the difference between 7001 and 7001K?
Both are 1.2 mm soft-close ball-bearing slides. The 7001 uses a single closing spring; the 7001K uses two, which pulls heavier drawers shut more firmly.
Which length do I order?
Measure the inside depth of the cabinet and subtract about 10 mm. A 500 mm slide needs a 504 mm minimum cabinet depth (see the drawing on each model page).
Do the undermount slides fit 16 mm and 18 mm drawer sides?
Yes. The 7002, 7003, 7010 and 7016 are made for 16 or 18 mm drawer sides; drawer outer width is cabinet inner width minus 26 mm.
Can I get push-open drawers and doors from the same supplier?
Yes. Pair the 7009 or 7003 push-open slides with the 7551 push-open hinge or the 6920 spring-free hinge and a push latch from the push-to-open family.
What is the minimum order?
One carton per length: 15 pairs for ball-bearing slides, 10 pairs for undermount slides. Mixed lengths across cartons are normal.
